Shore Tomorrow

The 135,000 square foot Surgical Pavilion with modern operating and recovery rooms and other support space is the main highlight of the hospital’s Campus Development Plan. The Surgical Pavilion will have 11 operating rooms—offering surgical suites over twice the size of the current space—and be outfitted with the latest technology. Additionally, the pavilion will be home to all areas of surgical services including registration, pre-admission testing, surgical reception and the post-anesthesia care unit. Other services including the CardioVascular Institute, endoscopy services, IV therapy and sterile processing also will be located in the new building.

Environmentally Friendly Construction Plans

Shore Medical Center is designing the new Surgical Pavilion to be LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) certified. This certification recognizes buildings for implementing practices to help save energy and enhancing the environment for healing. The exterior of the building is an attractive mix of limestone, glass and masonry to complement the existing structure. Rooftop gardens are planned to create a pleasing view from adjacent windows and help keep the building environmentally friendly. The grounds will be landscaped attractively with healing gardens or plazas where patients, visitors, employees and the public can visit to reflect and relax. Other LEED areas include more efficient heating and cooling of the building. Instead of having a dark roof which absorbs heat, the new white roof and rooftop gardens will help control heat levels within the building. Reducing waste and recycling are other key parts of the construction plans. The hospital plans to recycle its construction waste and use materials containing recycled content such as linoleum. In an effort to reduce its carbon footprint and to support local businesses, Shore is using materials that are manufactured within 500 miles of Somers Point. Additionally, the hospital plans to reduce water used in landscaping by directing storm water to water its gardens. Stay tuned for more updates and news as the campus expansion project continues.
