Shore Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Staff Publish Book

November 08, 2010

If you want something done right, do it yourself.

That’s the tactic Dr. Theresa Campo, a nurse practitioner with Shore Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department, took after she struggled to find a medical reference guide for procedures that was suitable for the hectic environment she works in on a daily basis.

“I would either have to look for text books on emergency medicine or text books on primary care,” said Dr. Campo. “There just wasn’t something out there that was easy to use and that covered the entire spectrum.

Dr. Campo joined forces with Shore Memorial Emergency Physician Dr. Keith Lafferty to author and edit “Essential Procedures for Practitioners in Emergency, Urgent, and Primary Care Settings,” a clinical companion officially released by Springer Publishing on Monday, October 25.

The book is designed to be used as a reference guide for nurse practitioners, physician assistants, seasoned physicians and their respective students. The book offers background information, illustrations and step-by-step instructions for providing safe and efficient treatment to patients in the emergency, urgent care and primary care settings.

“We wrote it with the intention of being concise,” said Dr. Campo. “We wanted it to have all the pertinent information one would need, but make it easier to use than a traditional text book where you have to go through 20 pages to find what you need.”

Dr. Lafferty and Dr. Campo began work on the book in 2009. Many of the procedures included in the book were drawn from cases they’ve seen at Shore Memorial, with photos taken in the hospital’s Emergency Department.

Dr. Lafferty has been a physician in Shore Memorial’s Emergency Department for more than two years, and also works in the Emergency Department at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, Fla. He lives in Cape May with his wife and three children.

Dr. Campo has been a nurse practitioner at Shore Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department since 2004. She is the owner and primary lecturer of Farfalla Education LLC providing educational seminars to nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner students. She is the column editor of the Cases of Note column in the Advanced Emergency Nursing Journal and adjunct professor at Case Western Reserve University. Dr Campo lives in Palermo with her husband and two dogs.
