For her unwavering dedication and quality patient care, Shore Medical Center has honored Carol McDowell of Somers Point, NJ, as its Employee of the Month for November 2011.
McDowell joined Shore in 1988 as an Ultrasound Sonographer. Her desire for higher education led her to Gloucester County Community College and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, and to eventually complete her registry requirements for diagnostic medical sonography. She served on the team that introduced Ultrasound Services at the Health and Conference Center, and helped expand Shore’s fetal monitoring and perinatology services. McDowell officially retired from her position as Lead Sonographer earlier this year, but volunteered to continue working until a co-worker returns from maternity leave.
McDowell was nominated by Derek Suragh, Shore’s director of diagnostic imagining. Suragh cited McDowell’s efforts in helping save a patient’s life this past summer. The patient, who had come in for a routine ultrasound, turned out to be bleeding heavily from a ruptured cyst, which was only diagnosed and treated after McDowell referred the patient to Shore’s Emergency Department.
McDowell’s attention to detail and her commitment to Shore’s mission of providing the highest quality patient care made her an easy choice as employee of the months.
