In honor of American Heart Month and Valentine’s Day, we encourage you to make your heart health a priority so you can be there for the people you love as long as possible. We offer these three simple tips to take better care of your heart:
- Control your blood pressure and cholesterol: Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and decreasing your intake of sodium, cholesterol, and saturated and trans fats are two great ways you can control your blood pressure and cholesterol. You can also have your blood pressure checked for free on the first Wednesday of every month at the Auxiliary of Shore Medical Center’s Somers Point thrift shop. Click here to learn more.
- Maintain a healthy weight: Keep your body mass index below 25 – anything higher puts you at greater risk for heart disease. Calculate your BMI using the American Heart Association’s easy online tool.
- Exercise: The American Heart Association recommends you get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. Thirty minutes a day, five times a week is an easy goal to remember. You will also experience benefits even if you divide your time into two or three segments of 10 to 15 minutes per day. Learn more about the American Heart Association’s recommendations here.
If you or a loved one is in need of cardiovascular care, we encourage you to contact our partners at Penn Cardiology at (609) 365-3100. They are located at 155 Medical Center Way in the medical office building across from the medical center. The Penn Cardiology Somers Point physicians provide a full range of cardiovascular services.
