Create a Winning Costume on a Budget at Shore Thrift Stores

October 05, 2016

If you want to win “Best Costume” at this year’s Halloween party, here’s a tip: the more creative and original your costume, the better your odds of winning. Here’s another: The most creative costumes usually aren’t the kind you drop $50 on at one of those big box stores. Instead, winning ensembles are those that combine originality, creativity and a little effort.

The Auxiliary of Shore Medical Center’s Thrift Shops in Somers Point and Marmora are the perfect shops to get your creative costume juices flowing. With an endless inventory of unique and original clothing and accessories, our shops are sure to supply you with something special to make your costume outstanding this year.

Here are some tips to help you come up with a creative costume, while spending the least and making the most of this year’s Halloween costume fun:

  • Contemplate current events: Look to current celebrity gossip, politics, and sports trends to find some fun ideas. Example: With the upcoming election, why not dress up as Hillary Clinton? You’re likely to find a great replica of one of her signature pant suits on our racks. Or, with Gene Wilder passing away this year, how about pulling together a great Willy Wonka get-up? You’ll just need a long purple jacket or blazer, khaki pants, a big gold bow, a floral button down, brown top hat and a cane!
  • Look to Movie/TV Characters: Instead of buying the ready-to-go movie or cartoon character costume, look at the color and styles of their clothing and find something similar. For example, if you want to dress as Velma from Scooby Doo, search the thrift store racks for an orange turtleneck, red pleated skirt and Mary Jane heels. You can accessorize with thick framed glasses and yellow knee socks from home.
  • Consider Iconic Art: Think of a famous painting, portrait or artist and come up with clever ways to copy the look. Artist Freda Kahlo’s look couldn’t be more distinct, or replicable. Style your hair as she often did, parted in the middle and pulled back with a crown of large flowers.  Look for brightly colored, loose and flowing fabrics and oversized jewelry to complete the look. Don't forget the eyebrow pencil!

If you don’t care about winning a costume contest this year but still need something, we have plenty of other great ideas and outfits you can pull together from our racks. Right now you can find ready-to-go costumes like pirates and witch outfits. Or, we have plenty of clothing that can easily be combined to make a costume, like this cowgirl outfit, pictured above. Take this Calvin Klein denim dress and pair it with these beautiful Frye leather cowboy boots, a patterned scarf, and a suede tassel belt – all found on the racks at our Somers Point thrift shop. Pair it with a cowboy hat from your closet and you’re set!
