Kindness adds up in so many different ways. Thanks to the Northfield Community School Kindness Committee, patients at the Shore Cancer Center will be feeling the love. During the month of October students wanted to do something that helped cancer patients so the Kindness Committee members came up with a coin drive. For the entire month those spare pennies, nickels and dimes certainly added up. The response was strong and Northfield Elementary Community School Principal, Maureen Vaccaro said students really got into the cause for the entire month because they knew it was going to help people fighting cancer.
Shore Cancer Center staff Kim Kaczmarski, Oncology Services Mgr., Vickie Riskie RN, Nurse Mgr., Joia DiStefano, Coalition Coordinator and Angela Bailey, Mgr. Cancer Community Outreach visited the Northfield Community School December 5 and met with the Kindness Committee members to thank them personally and let them know how their donation would directly help cancer patients.
The response was strong and Northfield Elementary Community School Principal, Maureen Vaccaro said students were really excited that they could make a difference and do something to personally help people who are battling cancer.
More than $1120 was raised during the month-long coin collecting effort. Those funds were earmarked directly to the Shore Cancer Center to purchase DVD players for patients to use during their treatments. The fundraising effort was also able to supply several hundred sets of disposable headphones for patients and some DVD’s to jump start the Shore Cancer Center’s library.
The team from the Shore Cancer Center wanted to meet the students who were so supportive of the Cancer Center and its patients. “We wanted to say thank you and to let you know, on behalf of the Shore Cancer Center patients what a fantastic effort this was. Our patients are going through some pretty rough times in their life when they have cancer. This will allow them to relax, watch a movie and help them pass the time during their treatments,” said Kaczmarski.
Fourth grade teacher Barbara Shenkus, advisor to the Kindness Committee said they were amazed at the amount of money raised by just collecting coins, adding that the kids were really proud of their effort. The names of the fourth grade students who are members of the Kindness Committee include Lily Edge, Alexa Heist, Avery Iapaluccio, Dante DeRosa, Charlotte Gerber, Bella Baldwin, Sarah Foltz, Ryan Alfieri, and Roslyn Brozosky.
