The Auxiliary of Shore Medical Center (SMC) celebrated the start of the holiday season with the annual illumination of its Tree of Lights on Wednesday, December 7 in the Ben and Flora Baker Surgical Pavilion Lobby.
Memories of family and friends are especially poignant during the holiday season. Through the Tree of Lights, members of the community are invited to commemorate those special people in their lives by making a Memorial or Honorary donation and having their names inscribed in the Tree of Lights book, which is on display in the SMC lobby throughout the holiday season.
This year, the Auxiliary raised $5,000 in generous donations through the Tree of Lights book, with all proceeds benefiting the medical center.
Every year, an Auxilian is recognized at the ceremony, attended by SMC executives, employees, patients and members of the community. This year, Auxilian Mary Ann Barile of Marmora was honored for 40 years of service to the Auxiliary. Barile joined the Auxiliary in 1975, serving in numerous leadership roles within the organization over the years. She has received several awards from Shore and in 1999, the New Jersey Hospital Association honored her with its prestigious Catalyst of the Year Award. Barile did all of this as a wife and mother with a full-time job as an elementary school teacher. Barile continues to serve the Auxiliary by volunteering at the hospital gift shop.
