Shore Medical Center Announces its Oct. 5 “A Cause to Celebrate” Gala Benefiting Cancer Care

July 17, 2018

Gala to honor Ambassador William Hughes and Dr. David Angelastro

The social event of the year is back! Shore Medical Center announces its fourth annual gala, A Cause to Celebrate, which benefits Shore Cancer Center.  Since its inception, A Cause to Celebrate has raised more than $1.5 million to help people in our community access compassionate cancer care, close to home. The gala will take place on Friday, October 5, 2018 at the Golden Nugget Hotel Casino in Atlantic City, starting at 6pm. Tickets to the black-tie-optional affair are $250 per person. Sponsorships and tickets are available by calling 609-653-3986 or visiting

This year’s A Cause to Celebrate gala will specifically fund Shore Cancer Center’s subscription to Penn Medicine’s telegenetics program. This program plays a vital role in how Shore is able to treat qualified cancer patients by allowing physicians to have higher clarity of the patient’s disease. The genetic markers found through this program can determine the form of treatment that is best for the patient.

There has been incredible progress in technology and pharmaceutical development – even in the past year alone – but in order for the patient to have access to certain trade drugs and biosimilars, they must first go through the genetic testing process. The funds raised from this event will help assure that this genetic testing process is available at Shore Cancer Center.

Shore Medical Center Chief Financial Officer and Chief Development Officer David Hughes urges people to take time out of their busy schedule to attend this once-a-year gala to help people with cancer.
“Supporting A Cause to Celebrate shows that you are not only a vital part of our community, but you care about local families, friends and neighbors who are in need of cancer care close to home,” said Hughes. “The gala has become one of our area’s premier social events and charity fundraisers, where all proceeds go directly back into our local community.”

Shore Medical Center is honored to announce this year’s Community Leader Honoree is   Ambassador William Hughes and the Physician Honoree is Dr. David Angelastro. Ambassador Hughes generously volunteered his time and expertise on the Shore hospital board in the early 1970s, and after his service in Panama, served on the Health System Board for nearly 20 years. Dr. Angelastro, medical director of emergency medicine at Shore, and his team have helped Shore score in the top percentile among hospitals nationwide when it comes to treatment and care in the emergency room.

A Cause to Celebrate will feature a wide variety of delicious foods from around the world, premium cocktails, homemade desserts, live music, dancing, and a silent auction. Auction items include jewelry donated by Bernie Robbins; an exotic vacation donated by Liberty Travels; limited edition memorabilia; wine baskets, art, and much more.

New to the gala this year is a live performance by the Atlantic City Ballet of the opera “Carmen”.
