Shore Medical Center to honor Dr. David May at its 5th Annual “A Cause to Celebrate” Gala

April 10, 2019

Shore Medical Center is proud to announce that it will honor Dr. David May at its 2019 “A Cause to Celebrate” Gala, which will be held Friday, September 20 at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino. Proceeds from this event will benefit those being treated at Shore Cancer Center.

Dr. David May, a general surgeon with Shore Physicians Group and a leader in the Shore medical community – especially Shore Cancer Center - will be honored at the event for the difference he has made.

Since its inception in 2015, Shore Medical Center’s annual “A Cause to Celebrate” gala has highlighted our community’s need for high-quality cancer care close to home, while raising more than $2 million to enhance Shore Cancer Center’s comprehensive cancer program. This year, proceeds will specifically help Shore convert the oncology pharmacy in the cancer center to a negative pressure room in order to meet new federal requirements for all facilities that store and administer cancer-fighting medications. Chemotherapy and other drugs that kill cancer can have a serious impact on the health of those who handle them if there is a spill, and this update will help to keep them safer.

Proceeds this year will also continue to fund Shore Cancer Center’s ongoing subscription to Penn Medicine’s telegenetics program, which gives oncologists a greater understanding of the patient’s genetic markers so they can provide more targeted and effective treatment.  Genetic testing through the program also is a necessary precursor to accessing certain trade drugs and biosimilars.

David May, MD, General Surgeon joined Shore Physicians Group in 2012 as one of the original 10 SPG physicians.  Most recently, he along with others in the SPG Surgical Division, have been designated as part of the Penn Specialty Network.

Dr. May played a critical role in the expansion of weekly Cancer Conferences in Shore's Cancer Center.  A multi-disciplinary team meets weekly, including Dr. May and others, to review patient cases, progress, treatment options and outcomes; his dedication to his breast cancer and oncology patients is unmatched and greatly appreciated by those in our community.

“We are very fortunate to have Dr. David May as leader in our organization and as an extremely skilled and passionate surgeon. He has touched the lives of so many in our area, and continues to make a difference every day. It is our privilege to be able to honor him at this year’s gala and celebrate with the community the incredible work he has done,” Jessica Giles, development manager for Shore Medical Center.

The event will feature a wide array of foods from around the world, an open bar with top shelf offerings, music and dancing. There will also be spectacular entertainment featuring dramatic strength and balancing acts, a silent auction, and much more. Tickets are priced at $250 per person.
